In our Classic Review Series here Read review of Creature From the Black Lagoon below, which was originally headlined, "Black Lagoon Diverting Science-Fiction Meller."

A "good piece of science-fiction of the beauty and the beast school, the beast in this case being a monstrous combination of man and fish"

On Feb. 9, 1954, a month before hitting theaters, The Hollywood Reporter met Universal's latest big screen monster.
Creature From the Black Lagoon is a good piece of science-fiction of the beauty and the beast school, the beast in this case being a monstrous combination of man and fish. It makes for solid horror-thrill entertainment.

Story starts when scientist Antonio Moreno discovers a huge web-fingered skeleton hand along the Amazon River. When he reports his find an expedition is organized to locate the rest of the skeleton. Among the scientists are Julia Adams, the beauty of the yarn, Richard Carlson, Whit Bissell and Richard Denning, the latter a publicity seeking character who, when he sees the fishman after it has killed several of the helpers, is determined to bring it back.

They capture it once, but it escapes after almost killing Bissell. Over Denning's objections the others decide to return for help, but the monster has blocked the exit from the lagoon, seeking revenge for the attack upon him and having designs on Miss Adams. It kills Denning and grabs the girl, being tracked down to its eerie hiding place where it is fatally wounded.

Screenplay by Harry Essex and Arthur Ross, from a story by Maurice Zimm, is soundly developed, leading to an exciting climax. Jack Arnold's megging is briskly competent, although too much time is wasted on underwater shots which are neither novel or dramatic enough to hold interest for the entire footage. Pruning here would help.

Lovely Julia Adams, finally out of the crinoline costumes, reveals a gorgeous pair of gams in a swimming sequence and turns in her customary fine performance. Richard Carlson, who seems to appear in most of the good science-fiction pictures, is convincing as the male lead, and Richard Denning is strong as the commercial-minded head of the expedition. Nestor Paiva contributes an excellent stint as the skipper of the river boat, and Antonio Moreno and Whit Bissell handle their roles capably.

The William Alland production was shot in black-and-white 3-D, the process adding some small value to the underwater shots which don't make up for the eyestrain. William E. Snyder's photography is good. Underwater sequences were ably directed by James C. Havens. —Milton Luban

London: Late pop star Michael Jackson's daughter Paris sparked pregnancy rumors after she was spotted with a bulging baby bump.

Paris, 16, and her boyfriend, who still hasn't been named, were spotted together on a dinner date recently, reports dailystar.co.uk.

"I saw her at dinner and she twice made a toast drinking water instead of wine. That and the prominent stomach bulge got people talking," a source was quoted as saying.

"It's highly unusual to toast with anything but a full glass of wine," added the source.

Sandra Bullock is Hollywood's top-earning actress

New York: Oscar winner Sandra Bullock is Hollywood's highest paid actress with estimated earnings of $51 million over 12 months, followed by Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Aniston, Forbes magazine said on Monday.

Bullock, 50, had a big hit last year with the space thriller film 'Gravity', which won seven Academy Awards including best director for Alfonso Cuaron, and made more than $716 million worldwide.

The best actress Oscar winner in 2010 for 'The Blind Side', Bullock jumped from seventh place on the previous Forbes earnings list to the top spot between June 2013 and June 2014.

"'Gravity' star Sandra Bullock didn't win best actress this year but she did walk away with a ton of money," according to Forbes.com.

'Hunger Games' actress Lawrence, 23, came in second for the second consecutive year with estimated earnings of $34 million, while Aniston, 45, climbed one spot to No. 3 with $31 million.

Forbes compiled the list by estimating earnings from the actresses' film work, endorsements, residuals and advertising work, and by talking to agents, managers and lawyers.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, who made an estimated $19 million, and Angelina Jolie, with $18 million, rounded out the top five. Jolie, 39, dropped from No. 1 last year.

Scarlett Johansson, the 29-year-old star of the sci-fi action thriller 'Lucy' came in seventh with $17 million, and 'Twilight' star Kristen Stewart, 24, fell from No. 3 last year to 10th place with earnings of $12 million.

Although all of the actresses pulled in hefty incomes, Forbes said women still earn less then men in Hollywood. While the 10 highest earning actors took home a combined total of $419 million, Hollywood's 10 best paid actresses made a total of $226 million during the same time period.

Salma Hayek stands out with dress, message at Cannes

With a fuchsia strapless dress that accentuated her voluptuous figure, Salma Hayek was already guaranteed to turn heads on the Cannes red carpet.

So she used the opportunity to draw attention to a crisis - the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian girls. The Oscar-nominated actress carried a sign with the hashtag "Bring Back Our Girls" as she walked in front of a throng of cameras to a preview of her animated film "The Prophet" on Saturday.

The "Bring Back Our Girls" slogan has been used on social media. Notable figures including U.S. first lady Michelle Obama have posed with the message to urge the return of the girls, taken hostage by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram a month ago.

Hayek is not the only Cannes participant to use the media to draw attention to a topical event. On Friday, the cast of the Turkish film "Winter's Sleep" held up signs with the hashtag Soma.

Soma is the Turkish city where 301 people were killed in an explosion and fire in a coal mine, the country's worst mining accident.

Los Angeles: A selfie of stand-up comedian and host Ellen DeGeneres, clicked by actor Bradley Cooper, which received over 1.1 million retweets in just half an hour, has reached 2,464,682.

The Academy Awards host, who handed her phone to Cooper to take the photo, became the most retweeted post ever on the social networking website, reports contactmusic.com.

Apart from DeGeneres and Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Lupita Nyong'o and her brother Peter all crammed into the photograph.

However, Degeneres poked fun at Cooper insisting they could have crammed even more stars into the photo if he had long hands.

"If only Bradley's arm was longer. Best photo ever. Oscar," she wrote along with the photo.

The 86th Academy Awards ceremony took place Sunday here.

'Gravity' wins seven Oscars

Los Angeles: Space drama "Gravity" bagged awards in seven of the 10 categories it was nominated for at the 86th Academy Awards. It won the best director award for Alfonso Cuaron but best film title was clinched by real-life inspired "12 Years a Slave" here.

"Gravity" was also honoured with the golden statuette for categories like film editing, music (original score), sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.

"12 Years a Slave" and "Dallas Buyers Club" won three awards each.

Based on the memoirs of Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York, who is abducted and sold into slavery, "12 Years a Slave" won best picture, best actress in a supporting role for Lupita Nyong'o, and best writing for adapted screenplay.

"Dallas Buyers Club" helped Mathew McConaughey win his first Oscar for his performance as an AIDS patient in the biopic. His co-star Jared Leto was honoured with an Oscar for best actor in a supporting role, while the film's make-up and hairstyling team Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews won an award too.

Cate Blanchett was thrilled to get the award for best actress in a leading role for "Blue Jasmine", in which she essays a rich socialite whose life crumbles because of a broken marriage.

"The Great Gatsby" was awarded for magnificent costumes and production design. Animated film "Frozen" too bagged two awards - best animation feature film and original song.

Surprisingly, crime-comedy drama "American Hustle", which had got 10 nominations, failed to get a single award at the glittering event, which was hosted by comedian and chat show host Ellen DeGeneres and was held at the Dolby Theatre.

DeGeneres infused life into the show with her funny antics, but a standout moment was when she gathered stars like Meryl Streep, Channing Tatum, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and a few more for a rare group selfie.

The star-studded event saw celebrities like John Travolta, Goldie Hawn, Sidney Poitier, Whoopi Goldberg, Anne Hathaway, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron as presenters on stage.

The annual extravaganza, which recognises the best in Hollywood, also saw some entertaining performances by rock band U2, Pharrell Williams, and Pink, who paid a tribute to the 1939 musical fantasy film "The Wizard Of Oz" for its 75th anniversary.
