Fashion shoot seems to depict Delhi gangrape, outrage on social media

Posted by Unknown | Wednesday, August 6, 2014 | Posted in ,

A Mumbai-based photographer Raj Shetye recently posted an album of photographs one of which reminds one of December 16 Delhi gangrape. The pictures have led to outrage on social media.

Shetye told several news outlets that his shoot was not based on the December 16 gangrape.

In the photo, a woman is held captive by two men on what looks like the backseat of a bus, and the woman seems to be fending off their advances.

The photos are not available online since that link shows "page not found" error.

Model-actor Jitin Gulati, one of the men featured in 'The Wrong Turn' series, tweeted to say that photos weren't intended to glorify an "intolerable act like rape". But many were not convinced. Here are a few smaple tweets.

@catattat : Just saw the Raj Shetye photoshoot which is scarily reminiscent of the Delhi bus rape incident. Honestly, don't know what to make of it.

@TGayatrireddy: How insensitive...an idiot raj shetye has shot a "glam photo shoot" inspired by the nirbhaya rape case

@pahallavi: Never expected horrible act from a photographer in the name of women empowerment. Raj Shetye your existence is now shameful #DaminiShocker

@paritoshZero: Raj Shetye, photographer, came up with a bus-rape inspired shoot. How much lower before we hit hell?

@NotJDSalinger: Raj Shetye may think his 'fashion shoot' based on rape is part of artistic license, but it just sent a shiver down my spine #nirbhaya

Families of Two Young Men Arrested for Alleged Links with ISIS Deny Police Reports

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in ,

A group of men seen wearing T-shirts carrying the ISIS emblem in Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: Families of the two young men arrested in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district for alleged links with Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an Islamist militant organization, have denied the police reports.

The police had arrested the two men after a group photograph of 26 men sporting T-shirts with the ISIS emblem went viral on Facebook since last week. Investigators claimed that the duo had distributed the T-shirts to celebrate the cause of ISIS.

In a small town called Tondi, Mohamad Fazil, father of Abdul Rehman, 26, one of the accused, claims "my son had actually ordered those T-shirts to celebrate ISIS's release of Indian nurses safely from the conflict zone in Iraq. But playfully, he had uploaded the pictures without knowing about the Indian Penal Code. The police is trying to make it appear as if he's a terrorist."

He added that his son was involved in cloth business in Thailand and Singapore.

However, not far away, the house of the other young accused, Rilvin, stands bolted shut. The police claim that Abdul Rehman used Rilvin to procure the T-shirts.

"Though the LTTE is banned, many in Tamil Nadu sport pictures of its chief late Prabhakaran on T-Shirts. It does not mean they have joined the LTTE. We feel we are being targeted as we are Muslims," said Sadiq Basha, secretary of the local Jamadh, defending the accused.

Although the police have not so far taken action against the other 24 men in the Facebook picture, the Superintendent of Police Dr Mayilvahanan told NDTV that "the duo have been seeking support for ISIS, an insurgent group fighting against the governments in Iraq and Syria and abetting insurgency is a crime."

"Abdul Rehman who has studied only up to class 12 has been frequently visiting Thailand and Singapore for business on tourist visa during which he became a strong supporter of the ISIS," said a senior police officer.

This case comes days after the Mumbai police said that four men in the city had reportedly joined the ISIS group after reports emerged that they were missing.

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in ,

New York: Oscar winner Sandra Bullock is Hollywood's highest paid actress with estimated earnings of $51 million over 12 months, followed by Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Aniston, Forbes magazine said on Monday.

Bullock, 50, had a big hit last year with the space thriller film 'Gravity', which won seven Academy Awards including best director for Alfonso Cuaron, and made more than $716 million worldwide.

The best actress Oscar winner in 2010 for 'The Blind Side', Bullock jumped from seventh place on the previous Forbes earnings list to the top spot between June 2013 and June 2014.

"'Gravity' star Sandra Bullock didn't win best actress this year but she did walk away with a ton of money," according to Forbes.com.

'Hunger Games' actress Lawrence, 23, came in second for the second consecutive year with estimated earnings of $34 million, while Aniston, 45, climbed one spot to No. 3 with $31 million.

Forbes compiled the list by estimating earnings from the actresses' film work, endorsements, residuals and advertising work, and by talking to agents, managers and lawyers.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, who made an estimated $19 million, and Angelina Jolie, with $18 million, rounded out the top five. Jolie, 39, dropped from No. 1 last year.

Scarlett Johansson, the 29-year-old star of the sci-fi action thriller 'Lucy' came in seventh with $17 million, and 'Twilight' star Kristen Stewart, 24, fell from No. 3 last year to 10th place with earnings of $12 million.

Although all of the actresses pulled in hefty incomes, Forbes said women still earn less then men in Hollywood. While the 10 highest earning actors took home a combined total of $419 million, Hollywood's 10 best paid actresses made a total of $226 million during the same time period.

No takers for film on Communist leader Krishna Pillai

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in

Alappuzha: Anil V. Nagendran, a lawyer by profession, spent more than eight years to make 'Vasanthathinte Kanalvazhikalil', a film on legendary Communist leader P. Krishna Pillai, but there are no takers for the movie, which cost him a fortune.

The 49-year-old produced and directed 'Vasanthathinte Kanalvazhikalil'. Set in the 1940s, it highlights the role played by Pillai, founder of the Communist movement in the state besides party legends like A.K. Gopalan, E.M.S. Namboodiripad and other leading lights and in fighting castism and feudalism.

The film has hit a few roadblocks and the first one came soon after its release in March. The Election Commission issued a notice to the filmmaker following complaints from the Congress Party saying the film's screening during the Lok Sabha poll campaign could hurt them.

"As soon as the Election Commission served me the notice, and since I didn't want to enter into a controversy, I pulled out my film after a week in the theatres. It was running in 40 centres in Kerala," Nagendran IANS.

Making the film was not a cakewalk.

"I started research for my film, which was in my heart for a long time, in 2006. In 2010, I created the set in a village in Kollam district. The film was released in March this year. Since then the going got tough," said Nagendran.

Interestingly, the film's cast features artists like Samuthirakani, Mukesh, Siddique, KPAC Lalitha, Urmila Unni, Sudheesh and several others, while music has been composed by eight composers.

The film was the last work of legendary musician Dakshinamoorthy.

As many as 24 crooners, including K.J. Yesudas and Chithra, were roped in to sing nine songs.

"I was aiming to get satellite rights for my film and I had high hopes from the party backed Kairali TV channel, but nothing has materialised yet. I did vent my feelings at a function attended by very senior leaders of the party recently," said Nagendran.

Udaunted by fruitless efforts, Nagendran has planned his next move.

"Even though I am an advocate by profession, my passion is films and now I have started preliminary work on a proposed film that will speak on 'world peace'.

"The fire in me, which I had as a student activist of the Communist movement, will take me forward braving all odds," said Nagendran.

Meanwhile he is still searching for 'peace' after getting a raw deal for 'Vasanthathinte Kanalvazhikalil', which he expects to return to the theatres during Onam.

Nayanthara turns mother in supernatural thriller

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in ,

Chennai: It's not easy to direct a star, but 24-year-old newcomer Ashwin Saravanan, who has a few short films to his credit, has become one of the youngest directors to work with actress Nayanthara in upcoming yet-untitled Tamil 'supernatural thriller'.

"Nayanthara plays a mother and the story predominantly revolves around her character. That's all I can reveal at the moment," Ashwin told IANS.

Potential Studios, a subsidiary of popular Tamil production house Studio Green is producing the film, which also features Aari in the lead.

How did a 24-year-old convince a top production house and manage to rope in a star in his debut?

"It was quite challenging because I haven't assisted anyone. But instead of pitching the story to my producers, I shot a five-minute pilot scene from the film and approached them. I narrated my story and subsequently showed them the scene. They really liked it," he said.

"In a supernatural thriller, it's mostly the visuals and the tone of the film that matter. The pilot scene came in very handy because no matter how good a story is, producers usually worry about the final product. That's precisely why I gave them a glimpse of what I intend to make," he added.

Nayanthara came onboard because the producers felt 'someone with great screen presence could only pull off the role'.

"Initially, we felt she might not do this film. But after I saw the Tamil remake of 'Kahaani', I thought she might be interested in doing it. We approached her and I showed her the pilot scene. Two days later, she agreed to be part of the project," Ashwin said.

Nayanthara believes in 'director's vision' and is a 'thorough professional' to work with, says Ashwin, who is still left with 15 days of shoot.

"She's a delight to work with. She never asks questions and trusts in her director. It's very easy to work with her and never do you feel that she's a star," he said.

"This supernatural film will be more about the characters. Audiences won't get to see Nayanthara or her stardom because they'll be engrossed by her character. Her costumes, acting and everything around her will be organic," he added.

This will be the first time Nayanthara will be essaying a mother character in a Tamil project. In Telugu, she has played a mother in 'Tulasi' and 'Sri Rama Rajyam'.

Ashwin admits he initially had his 'reservations' about whether Nayanthara will accept a mother's role.

"People aren't used to seeing her as a mother in Tamil movies and that part worried me the most. But after I saw her playing a mother to two kids in a Telugu film, I hoped she wouldn't mind playing the role again. I'm glad she agreed to do it and she's been splendid," he said.

The film, which is jointly produced by Prabhu and Prakash Babu, has music by debutant Ron Yohan.

Kochi: The first batch of 44 Keralite nurses, stranded in strife torn Libya, would arrive here on Today.

The nurses, working in various hospitals in Libya, have reached Tunisia, from where they will be reaching Dubai to take the scheduled flight to Kochi and arrive here on Tuesday morning, CEO of non-resident Keralite affairs department (NoRKA) P Sudeep said.

Fifty-eight nurses had reached Tunisia from Tripoli two days ago, of which 44 are coming on Today. While three nurses are expected to arrive by another flight, the remaining are expected to reach Kerala on Wednesday. Another 43 nurses have reached Tunisia border on Monday, he said.

Fighting between rival militias in Tripoli over the past three weeks and bloody clashes between Islamists and army in the eastern city of Benghazi have prompted several countries to evacuate their nationals and diplomatic staff.

Last month, forty six nurses, who were held captive by ISIS militants in Iraq, returned home by a special Air India Flight here bringing an end to their about month long trauma.

It's better you shutdown KSRTC, says HC

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Monday made an observation that it is better to shutdown KSRTC, that has 'no use for the public'. The court made the oral observation while considering 35 cases, including cases of employee benefits, against the department.

By closing KSRTC down, the only consequence will be that the government will lose a ministry, the court said. If the department does not have money to provide benefits to its employees, it should sell properties to clear those dues, the court said.

Meanwhile, the government pleader informed the court that the department is running at a lose of Rs60 crore as the reason for failing to provide benefits to its employees.

The court made the statement while considering a petition filed by KSRTC employees stating that KSRTC had not been giving pension and other incentives to its staff.

For 10 days, Jailed Sahara Chief Subrata Roy Can Stay in Conference Room

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in ,

The Supreme Court has allowed Subrata Roy, the chief of the Sahara group of companies, to stay in and use the conference room at Delhi's Tihar Jail for 10 days while he negotiates the sale of his properties, including three hotels overseas.
Mr Roy has been lodged in Tihar Jail since March this year.
The court emphasised today that it was allowing "this arrangement for 10 working days only to negotiate sale of properties." It has also allowed two Sahara directors, also in jail, to stay in the conference room along with Mr Roy.
On the court's orders the Sahara chief can bring to the conference room a mobile phone, a desktop computer and two laptops. Two secretarial assistants and one technician will be allowed to help them from 6 am to 8 pm on these 10 working days. The Tihar Jail will provide video-conferencing and internet facilities, for which Sahara will pay.
Mr Roy, 66, has been arrested over his group's failure to repay lakhs of small investors who were sold bonds that were later declared illegal. Numerous attempts by lawyers to have him released on bail have been unsuccessful.
The court had asked Sahara to deposit Rs. 10,000 crore initially to secure the release of its top man on bail. Now, the Income Tax department has told the court that Sahara has to pay Rs. 10,049 in tax dues.
Sahara has said it does not have the kind of money it has been ordered to pay to secure bail for its chief and has been offering to do so in installments.
Sahara, whose assets include the landmark Plaza hotel in New York and Grosvenor House in London, has also offered to sell its three overseas hotels to meet the payment demands. The judges had asked for more information, including approval from Bank of China, with which the assets are pledged.
Mr Roy's lawyers had pleaded that he needs to be able to meet with representatives of prospective buyers and conduct negotiations through videoconferencing. At the last hearing, the judges had asked Mr Roy's lawyers and jail officials to agree on a plan to be reviewed today.
In 2012, the Supreme Court ordered Sahara to repay, with interest, all investors who subscribed to bonds sold by two of its businesses, saying the company had not met the rules prescribed the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi).
While Sahara says it has repaid most of the money and that the remaining sum owed is about Rs. 2,500 crore, the Supreme Court and the Sebi have disputed that.

7 Ways Your Smartphone Can Actually Make You Happier

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in

Smartphones get a pretty bad rap, and not without reason. We tap away at our phones instead of talking to our friends, sleep with them instead of people, and miss crucial life moments while staring into screens.

But in a recent study conducted by New York Magazine, every demographic surveyed -- from the “W’Burg Hipsters” to “Playground Parents” -- said their smartphones brought them more more joy than anxiety.

So, is your smartphone good or evil? It all depends on how you use it. Here are seven ways to use your smartphone to make you happier.

Call someone.

Remember the days when you had to pick up the phone if you wanted to know how your friend's day was? Your smartphone can do that too. Firing texts back and forth may seem sufficient, but Sherry Turkle, an MIT psychologist, has found that we “cheat” our relationships when we text instead of call.

“The complexity and messiness of human communication gets shortchanged,” Turkle said, according to Time. “Those things are what lead to better relationships.”

Better yet, FaceTime.

If you’re calling more than texting you’re already doing well -- as Jeffrey Kluger writes in Time, Americans between 18-29 send and receive about 88 texts versus making 17 phone calls per day -- but FaceTime and Skype are even better options.

Studies show that we need close relationships to be happy, and although actually spending time with another person is the best way to forge a real connection, being able to seeing that person’s face on a screen is a close second.
Download happy apps.

Sure, there are a bunch of time-wasting apps out there -- looking at you, Angry Birds -- but apps can also increase the quality of your life. Although we highly recommend escorting your devices out of the bedroom every night, if you insist on keeping your phone around, try downloading a sleep app.

Getting more and higher quality sleep can boost our health and happiness, so try SleepCycle, SleepBot or Sleep As Android.

Other suggestions include Embark and MetroNap, which can help ease the stress of your commute (and help you get more sleep), and Yelp and OpenTable. Hey, it always helps to have the opinions of others when it comes to monumental life decisions ... like where to eat lunch. Don’t forget about Google Maps either -- it always feels a little better to know where you’re going.

Use your smartphone to get fit.

Everyone has fitness goals, and your smartphone can help you get there faster. Using fitness apps can help you improve your exercise regimen, which will produce more endorphins, the happy chemical our brains release during exercise.

Try downloading the apps Endomondo and Runtastic. They'll calculate your daily miles and steps and cheer you on along the way.

Take a “microbreak.”

There’s no question that spending all day on your smartphone will lead to a pretty unproductive day, but one study found that taking short breaks -- adding up to about 20 minutes total -- with your smartphone during the workday can make you happier.

"We found that employees can recover from some of their stress to refresh their minds and take a break," said Sooyeol Kim, a doctoral student at Kansas State University.

Let your Smartphone teach you how to meditate.

Are you one of those people who just can't seem to meditate, no matter how hard you try? With the large number of meditation apps out there, you may finally be able to enjoy meditation's many benefits.

Try downloading Headspace, Calm.com or MindBody Connect and get ready to say so long to all that stress that's been weighing you down.

Allow social media to make you happier.

Scrolling through your Facebook feed for hours feeling jealous of everyone’s lives definitely isn’t healthy, but studies suggest that social media can also boost your happiness.

In fact, Cornell professor Jeff Hancock found that students felt “more loved and worthy” after visiting their Facebook profiles than they did during traditional self-affirmation exercises. So as long as you’re not overdoing it, you can start viewing your social media apps as friends instead of enemies.

To take it to the next level, download Happier, an app that not only helps you express gratitude more regularly but connects you with a positive, supportive community.

Hey, there’s a reason the “W’burg Hipsters,” “Playground Parents” and more said their phones brought them joy. When used in the right way, smartphones are a fun way to pass a few free minutes, make your life easier and, yes, connect with people.
